Probate is the legal process through which a deceased person’s estate is administered and distributed according to their will (if they have one) or according to state laws if there’s no will (intestate). The purpose of probate is to ensure that debts are paid, assets are properly distributed, and the wishes of the deceased are honored, as outlined in their will or as determined by the court.
